Help Victims of Beryl!

Union Park destroyed by Beryl

Update! - 2024-12-26

I have just returned from spending a month in the Grenadines. Most of the islands are back to their former beauty. St Vincent is looking good with only some dock repairs still ongoing from what I saw. Bequia has similar dock damages but they have mostly recovered and everyone was in good spirits. Sandy Lane Marina reopened December 1 and contrary to rumors, Scruffy's is fully restored and we enjoyed some drinks there. The Tobago Cays are missing about half the mooring balls and some of the reef tables were damaged but the reefs themselves are alive and well and Beach BBQ on Petit Bateau was as magical as ever.

The real damage was on Union. The town of Clifton is still recovering with many of the businesses and buildings missing. Many of the residents are living in a tent city East of the marina. Also sad is that all the bars and restaurants in Chatham Bay are destroyed.

I am glad to report that our efforts have helped some of the people we know in the Grenadines get back up on their feet. Captain Neil is one example of this. He survived the storm laying in his bath tub with a mattress on top of him as we listened to his home being dismantled around him by the storm. He is still rebuilding his home, but with the boat repair grant, we were able to help him repair his skiff, and he is back in business hosting Beach BBQ. We are still in communication with Captain Neil and other people from Union that work on the water and rely on their small skiffs for their work and will continue to provide assistance where we can.

The need still exists. Information about how you can contribute to this cause is below.

I will be headed to the Grenadines this month. I will visit with the people we have assisted and see what more needs to be done to get these small family businesses back in operation. We believe it is the right thing to do for them and benefits coastal cruisers such as ourselves, as these are the people who provide us services and assistance when we are cruising their shores and harbors.

I hope to provide more information after getting my feet back on the water there.

Thank you to all who have donated to help victims of Hurricane Beryl in St. Vincent and the Grenadines! With your help, we have been able to put thousands of dollars in aid directly into the hands of people in need.

We have chosen to focus on people who work on the water providing services to cruisers like us. These islanders rely on their small skiffs to provide mooring assistance, act as water taxis, provide catering, and many other goods and services. Unfortunately, many of those skiffs were damaged or destroyed in the hurricane, effectively shutting down their small businesses. We have been providing aid to assist these people in repairing/replacing these boats to help them get back in business and restore their individual incomes.

The need still exists, so if you are interested in helping us in this cause, please see below!

Dear Friends,

Union Island, one of the smaller islands in the Grenadines, was one of the most heavily struck by the devastating Hurricane Beryl. Many families have lost their homes, belongings, and sources of livelihood. As the community comes together to rebuild, we are reaching out for your support.

Anyone who has sailed with us in the Grenadines will remember the wonderful people who support us there with their services. Captain Neil and his crew at Beach BBQ in the Tobago Keys, Jon T of Happy Island, and Alex, the historian of Chatham Bay, are just a few of the people who are falling in the gaps from other support programs that are currently focused more on the larger islands. Enable Adventure hopes to bridge that gap by going there in person and offering assistance to these people we know who have been so helpful to us in the past.
